Spring is here: Your 4 skincare tips for SPRING!

Cold weather months require us to moisturize more frequently and heavily to protect our skin from outdoor elements, indoor heating, and heavier clothing. Keeping the skin well-hydrated helps prevent itching, sensitivity, dryness, and flaking. As we say goodbye to winter let’s say “Hellooooo Spring” with these tips to revamp your skincare routine:

1. Lighten up

Spring in some regions of the country signals warmer and more humid air that can give your skin a boost of natural moisture. If you live in such a region, this is a great time to lighten up your moisture routine, switching from our lotion bars to body butters is one possibility.

For those of us living in the southwest the hot, dry air can leave our skin drier than ever, requiring us to maintain an intense moisture routine all year round, especially if showering more frequently or swimming. Since melanated skin can be excessively dry we find that body butter may be applied more sparingly, but lotion bars are still needed for those stubborn elbows, lower legs, and feet.

2. Protect and Prevent

***A broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is a must for all skin types, all year round! ***

Sunscreen is required even more during spring and summer when days are longer, outdoor activities increase and we will be wearing less clothing. UV radiation from the sun is the root cause of premature aging and wrinkles, and of course, skin cancer. Please look for brands that don’t contain oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates, or triclosan. When applying don’t forget hands, feet, ears and neck. In addition, to sunscreen remember your UVA/UVB protective sunglasses and try to access shade as much as possible.

 3. Get ready to show some skin

Spring is the time to reveal a fresh, healthy look by removing the layers of dead skin cells you packed during the winter. Body exfoliation makes skin feel softer, look more radiant, and enables your skin to retain hydration, making your skincare products more effective. Dry brush, loofah, and sugar scrubs are our favorite. Face exfoliation with dermatologist-approved scrubs smooths skin and prevents clogged pores and breakouts.

 4. Time to do a little spring cleaning

Check your beauty supplies and dispose of ALL products (even cleansers) that have expired or are older than 2 years! Not only do products lose their effectiveness over time (especially sunscreens which lose their SPF protection), they harbor potentially harmful bacteria and mold. Sadly, cosmetics don’t always have expiration dates, so it is a good practice to make note of the date of purchase on the container. Spring also is a great time to replace makeup brushes, sponges, and other applicators.
